Because Humans are fucking crazy, thats why. Most of the time we stick the middle finger up to nature and science.

In all honesty though it's probably something to do with the brain and even though it's made up of particles, theres obviously something in there for free will. I eman animals have free will, we just express it more.

Quantum statistics is a science based on the random probability of an atom or particle existing in a certain space. Everything is random, the fact that we exist at all is proof that random phenomena can create something incredible. What i'm getting at is that maybe it's the random nature of everythign that allows for free will to exist.

That is a reasonable answer. But I would argue that we could only have what seems or appears to be free will, because of the probabilistic nature of the atoms in our brains.

You could also argue that all thought patterns are just the opening and closing of Na and K channels in neurones, in order to channel an electrical impulse

You could also argue, that the movement of those Na+ and K+ ions relies on their random brownian motion, and the probability of them colliding with the Channels to be able to be moved from one side of the membrane to the other. I'm sure the channel protiens responsible take advantage of the attraction of opposite charges to attract the said ions, but it's still ultimately reliant on random probabilities of the ions transfered being sufficient to generate a nerve impulse. although i suppose because the ions channels are closed off to allow one way movement this i aslo turned to the advantage of the neurone.
